Ingredients

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened room temperature
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped green onions
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • black olives, sliced and halved

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Plastic wrap
  • Serving platter
  • Small sharp knife
  • Spoon

Method

  1. Combine the softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar, chopped green onions, and garlic powder in a mixing bowl. Mix thoroughly with a spoon until the mixture is smooth, evenly combined, and slightly sticky, with a bright yellow-orange hue.
  2. Transfer the mixture onto a large piece of plastic wrap. Shape it with your hands into a tight, smooth sphere, pressing gently to eliminate cracks. Wrap it securely in plastic and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to firm up.
  3. Once chilled, carefully unwrap the cheese ball and place it on a serving platter. Use a spoon to smooth out the surface if needed for a clean look.
  4. Gently press sliced black olives onto the top of the cheese ball to create the spider's body, arranging pieces to resemble a round torso.
  5. Using a small sharp knife, cut additional olive slices in half lengthwise to create the spider’s legs. Carefully insert eight olive halves around the body, four on each side, to mimic spider legs.
  6. Adjust the olives and shape the spider as desired for a balanced, spooky look, making sure the legs are evenly spaced.
  7. Serve immediately with crackers, sliced baguette, or vegetable sticks for a fun Halloween appetizer. The cheese ball can also be made a day ahead and kept refrigerated until ready to serve.

Notes

For a more realistic spider, use small pieces of pretzels for legs or add decorative eyes with tiny bits of black olive or peppercorns.
